Coding Interview Preparation Guide: DSA Study Plan
Coding interviews reward pattern recognition and clear communication more than memorised answers. This guide lists the lessons in the order a study plan would use them: plan first, then the core patterns, then the harder topics, then practice.
Pair it with the 12-week plan in the career series, which maps each week to these lessons.
Who it is for: Anyone preparing for data structures and algorithms rounds, from first loops to interview day.

1. Plan your preparation
- 1. Career Playbook · 14 minA Coding-Interview Study Plan Mapped to This Site
The handbook's 3-month plan (about 11 hours a week), three ways to order your study, and a 12-week table that points to the matching DSA lessons.

The four things interviewers score, techniques for before, during and after coding and when stuck, a mock-interview routine, a scoring sheet and a mistake log.
- 3. DSA · 20 minHow to Read a Problem
Input, output, constraints, examples and edge cases — and solving it by hand before writing any code.
- 4. DSA · 24 minBig-O: Counting the Steps
How many times does the loop run? Reading time and space complexity from code, and from the constraints of a problem.
2. Arrays, hashing and searching
- 5. DSA · 24 minBasic Hashing
Counting with arrays and maps, how a hash table works inside, and why lookup becomes instant.
- 6. DSA · 24 minPrefix Sum
Pre-compute running totals so that any range sum is instant.
- 7. DSA · 26 minTwo Pointers
Two indices moving towards each other or in the same direction — pair sums, reversing, removing duplicates, 3Sum.
- 8. DSA · 20 minSliding Window: Fixed Size
Reuse the last window's work instead of recomputing it.
- 9. DSA · 26 minSliding Window: Variable Size
Grow and shrink a window to find the longest or shortest answer.
- 10. DSA · 24 minKadane's Algorithm
The maximum subarray sum in a single pass, and the stock-trading problems built on the same idea.
- 11. DSA · 22 minTwo Sum and “Seen Before?”
Trading memory for speed with a map of what you have already met.
- 12. DSA · 24 minFrequency Maps and Grouping
Anagrams, top frequencies, the majority element and grouping by a key.
- 13. DSA · 26 minBinary Search on a Sorted Array
Halve the search space every step; first and last positions; rotated arrays.
- 14. DSA · 24 minBinary Search on the Answer
When the answer itself can be searched: square roots, eating speeds, shipping capacity.
3. Linked lists, stacks and queues
- 15. DSABuilding a Linked List
Nodes and pointers (links to the next node), built from scratch.
- 16. DSAReverse and Fast/Slow Pointers
Reverse a list, find the middle, and check if the list has a loop (a cycle).
- 17. DSAMerging and Cycle Problems
Join sorted lists, find where a loop starts, and remove the nth node from the end.
- 18. DSAStacks
Last in, first out. Examples: valid brackets, a stack that knows its minimum, and working out expressions.
- 19. DSAQueues and Deques
First in, first out, and a queue you can use from both ends.
- 20. DSAMonotonic Stack
Find the next bigger item. It also solves temperatures, stock spans, histograms and rain water.
4. Recursion and backtracking
- 21. DSA · 24 minRecursion Basics
A function that calls itself, a base case that stops it, and the call stack underneath.
- 22. DSARecursion Trees
Draw every call as a tree, so recursion is easy to follow.
- 23. DSASubsets and Permutations
Pick or skip each item, to list every possible choice.
- 24. DSABacktracking
Choose, try, then undo. Examples: combination sum, N-Queens, word search.
5. Trees, heaps and graphs
- 25. DSABinary Trees and Traversals
Root, leaves and height. Preorder, inorder and postorder, drawn and coded.

Visit a tree one layer at a time with a queue.
- 27. DSADFS on Trees
Height, balance, diameter (the longest path) and path sums.
